The Usage Processing System is a high volume transaction processing engine designed
specifically for telecommunications usage data processing. Its primary purpose is to
pre-process data in multiple formats and from multiple data sources into one common
data format stored in a database. It performs the mediation, usage identification,
call guiding (to the appropriate subscriber and/or company), branding, and error
handling. Usage Processing is integrated with the FireSteel Toll Rating engine for
standard domestic and international message rating. The system supports number pooling,
number portability, and the identification of wireless and local traffic. Call guiding
can be configured to be by trunk group, phone number, exchange, LRN, customer, and
carrier depending on the type of service. The system supports switched and dedicated
long distance and toll free services, as well as wireless transit and local transit
services. User interfaces have been built for configuration table maintenance and to
monitor, administer, and control usage data import and usage data export operations.
The main purpose of the usage data distribution component is to automatically distribute
call detail, and usage summary information to the local exchange carriers for carrier
access billing, end user billing, and capital credits MOU allocations. This same system
is used to automatically schedule and generate reports, least cost analysis processes,
and data extracts which can be used by downstream processes and any other use desired
by the local exchange carriers or customers. The system is configurable to support a
wide range of scheduling criteria, output formats, and variations of traffic types to
be included in the output. Automated email notifications and data delivery options
are also part of the system.
